Physician wellness (#ACAAI19 Twitter summary)

Kevin Parks MD@kparksmd Physician wellness session. Brain health has been on my mind. A few points made so far... Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among medical students. 400 US physicians die by suicide/year. Looking forward to retirement is not an acceptable mental health plan.

Specialty most likely to report feeling happiest outside of work? Allergy/Immunology.

Primary care physicians spend more time interfacing with their EMR than with their patients - contributing to physician burnout. Same trend reported among allergists in survey data comparing 2011 to 2014 (during period of ACA EMR implementation).

Medscape 2019 survey: 37% of allergists reported feeling either partially or totally burned out. At the top of the list of specialties - urology.

ACAAI 2017 survey Maslach burnout inventory showed burnout rates not affected by years in practice, ie older allergists NOT more likely to experience burnout compared to recently out of fellowship.
